Introduction

Round 1RomulanChris O'ConnellML (-10)
Round 1 versus a near clone of Slaby's worlds-winning Romulan deck. I'd printed this deck out to try it out, but thought it couldn't possibly be that good at its enormous size (without Historical Research!). I discovered I was wrong. I have only one deck that can beat it in test games, and that deck just wouldn't cut it against most things Len might bring. So, when Chris asked me if he should print out any decks two days before the tournament, I told him to do himself a favor and print that one.

Well, he did and then I had to face it too. I had kill prevention in the form of Gowron, but just once per turn wouldn't cut it. I managed to hit him hard at mission 1 (space), but it wasn't the Total Party Kill, and as he still had staffing left, I knew I was in for trouble. We both managed to solve space missions, but time ran out on his turn (I went first), and he was ahead on bonus points. We both had mission 2 buried, so I suppose it could have gone either way, but he had the Phoenix out (and I'd cut my damage marker the night before), so I was going to have to do my 40pt planet 3rd. I'd say he had the edge if we had more time.

Round 2VoyagerChristopher CoyleFW (+90)
More Tragic! Chris was playing a Voyager Long Journey Home deck (with Field Studies and At What Cost? to burn on Caretaker's points), and though he was getting some decent kills, I got the Total Party Kill on his first Caretaker's attempt (despite a Doctor and a Revised Chakotay!), and he never really recovered. He did eventually get staffing and moved to another mission to Field Studies it, but I hit the jackpot with Necessary Execution and All-Consuming Evil on top of my pile. Gowron prevented just enough kills to bring me home to 100 points.

Round 3CardassianLen NeidorfFW (+100)
Len's Cardassian deck is a beast. It eats attrition piles for lunch, but even without any kill prevention it has a low enough average cost (and thus, speed) to give Tragic decks a headache. However, he didn't smell the kills coming, and hit space with 8 (2 Deliriums gave me 10 to spend), and I caught the Total Party Kill. I'd pulled my Klag early, so when I went to space he realized there wasn't much he could do - Gowron got me through Old Differences/Hard Time on the first shot, and Len congratulated me, knowing his planet dilemmas would not fare much better.

Round 4TOSSteve CFL (-30)
Steve and I had been talking about the Kris TOS ALC build for a long time, and he'd made a couple changes to it that worked out very well for him. He went heavier on the Enterprise B, planning to use those points on Field Studies. It's a good strategy. I'll admit, I was confused when he used them on an already buried space mission, until I realized what was up - he'd burned my pile low enough that, when he dropped Helen Noel with her upgrade, it left me with one The Charming Mister Riker in my pile. His other missions were buried, and he thought he was out of Programming for Investigate Alien Probe, so he took a mega team to Transport Crash Survivors. He Kirked my one dilemma, and solved for the win. Strong work, Helen Noel is one of my favorite cards for just that reason.
