Winnipeg Regional (2012) |
Introduction |
Only managed to conjure up 5 players for this tourney, so we decided to do a round robin. I went 3-1 or 4-1 if you count the bye. Losing only to the top ranked player in attendance, but managing to win the tourney due to acts out of my control. |

Round 1 | | Mike Rudolph | FW (+60) |
I thought I had a bad start against Mike. Not enough personnel. This turned out to be ok though, because it meant I was able to use an early grav plating trap to cancel his sight for sore eyes, which I am assuming slowed him down a lot. A few mior difficulties finally paid off when I shut down the Defiant making it hard for mike to empty his hand and upgrade his mirror personnel. |

Round 2 | | Matthew Hayes | FW (+60)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
I don't remember a lot about this game other than the fact that I got some really good luck when choosing who I should stop against some of Matthew's dilemma combos. Oh wait, I do remember something. Explicit Orders is a great card against a caretaker's guest dilemma pile. If he had guessed that the next dilemma was a gomtuu then this game would have been a totally different story. |
Keith ran his #1 deck, that of Voyager. He won our opening CC era Regional in Fargo, back in '08 with the version as it stood at the time. With his brother Mark taking the Winnipeg title in '10, and myself taking it in '11 (last year, with Borg), I can't say as I blame him for running what he knows best, as it was due time for a local to win this Canadian Regional. I'm glad he pulled it off. Keith is a great guy and a fun player. Definitely deserved it. Kudos.
My one decent-sized blunder was while under fire from The Caretaker's Guests, I Explicit Orders'ed a Breen Founder INSTEAD of Martok Founder into my discard pile, in which MF would've put me at three diplomacy, with all my Jemmies at 6 integrity, to get me past the Gomtuu Shock Wave that was waiting for me at the end of the combo. D'oh! |

Round 4 | | Kris Sonsteby | FL (-30)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
This was the match years in the making. I had a decent start getting Syran and staffing early. Unfortunately I pulled a bonehead move and attempted with 5 personnel even though Kris was using Transport Crash Survivors. My crew got wiped out, including my 5 counter Syrran. My dilemma pile held Kris off for a while, including his use of Big Papa Kirk twice. The all star was vault of tommorow which grabbed an Inusrection. That slowed him down considerably at Investigate Maquis activity. I wish I had tow copies in my pile for this game. I managed to eventually get my crew back together and reach 70 points before Kris finished me off with a double attempt at Investigate Destruction. |
The Foreman was not surprisingly captaining Voyager, yet had his crew wiped out early by forgetting my Transport Crash Survivors. Fear of the kill pile bought me several turns, and despite Vault of Tomorrow stalling out several ground attempts I eventually popped a Driven in space for the win. FW 100-70. |

Round 5 | | Kyle Schewe | FW (+30)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
So with the standings as they were going into this game, either Kyle or I would win the tournament unless we went to time. I got of to a bit of a slow start getting hit by dreamer and the dream twice with pretty large hands. Kyle on the other hand got an easy 10 points for shooting voyager and played two at what costs. I was starting to get worried that I'd have to settle for third place, but I managed to hold Kyle of at his planet mission. Which worked out well since he couldn't attempt it next turn. I completed my final mission on that turn, with less than 5 minutes left. It doesn't really feel like a tournament win because I only finished ahead of Kris because Kyle is a newer player and had to read a lot of his cards against Kris, but not against my deck which he had played a against a few times. But a win is a win. First time winning my own regional. I think its about time to retire my voyager deck though and try something new. (Its gonna be sitting in my box though for the next time its needed to defend the home turf against invaders. |
Curse you Voyager! I hit hard in his first couple turns, hitting him with The Dreamer and the Dream twice. Once after using Biochemical Hyperacceleration. His skills were just too good for my dilemanas. So much Diplomacy, not enough cheap guys either to hit with Pitching In, and Caretaker's were no good after his first attempt b/c he had all his Chicote's in his discard pile, and I wanted to keep them there. My dilemn'as were just not good enough, and I was waiting a turn to attempt Explore Extradimensional world, when he got his last mission. If he had not won, I definitely had a chance of winning it on my turn. A very close game again. |
