the Typhon Pact |
Introduction |
For this year's Gen Con Indy 1E Cool tournament, I had just recently finished reading the latest chapters in the (TNG, DS9) saga of the 'Typhon Pact' novels, so I derived inspiration for my deck from those. Now that the novels have been out for a good number of months, as of this writing, figured I could give my report.
The nation states that comprise the Typon Pact: the Romulan Star Empire, the Breen, the Gorn Hegemony, the Tzenkethi, the Tholian Annex, and the Kinshaya.
So, in First Edition game availability, that drove the deck to be Romulan and Breen-centric. My little nods, as best as possible, included the Gorn Encounter dilemma (as we have no 1E Alpha Quadrant/non-Mirror Gorn personnel yet), Investigate Coup (Tzenkethi), and various other storyline nods, notably the Pact's adamant desire to acquire the post-Borg decimated Federation's newest technology, (hence Steal Technology), that of the Quantum Slipstream drive installed on Captain Ezri Dax's U.S.S. Aventine and other vessels. A la the A Fast Ship Would Be Nice x2 and the QSD's 'sort of' stand-in of Plasmadyne Relay. Explore Typhon Expanse II, their Strategic Base, naturally. And I couldn't forget, as they sorely needed their security blanket, the presence of Kukalaka, the great galactic teddy bear of serenity and peaceful zen, to allay their fears.

Round 1 | | Ryan Sutton | FL (-100) |
Ryan had a funky BPO deck, or 'Bonus Points Only' deck, the strategy of which was mind-numbingly fun. Yes, I said, fun. I quote one of my players here, "Stop! You're Hurting My Brain!" (as seen on the CC's own ai of Personal Duty). |

Round 2 | | Jeremy Commandeur | FL (-65) |
Jeremy had a deck I've now forgotten what it did. Doesn't help that he hasn't posted the decklist or a report. But, as my memory has failed me, it must've been something intriguing...?
The good thing is: I don't remember it being a bad game for me, so there is that.

Round 3 | | Corbin Johnson | FW (+44)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Corbin's "Die Wesley Die! Then Die Some MORE!" deck had us getting the point (nicely, btw). This was I believe my first matchup with him and we had a good time playing each other. I look forward to facing him in any tourney in the future. |
Matt had a very story-intensive build going which was quite creative (although I've never read the books his deck was built around). I actually managed to solve a mission and wesley again got the point. Also got some colony points. |

Closing Thoughts |
The Typhon Pact novels are pretty good reads and my deck was fun to craft and equally fun to play. That was what this event was all about, so win-win. I did manage to get a 'prize' of developing the story idea of a future 1E card. I'll have to update this segment with that info once the card comes out, however, am eagerly awaiting word on when that task will be placed before me...
As always, I have some ideas (initially to do with either the Tholians or the Gorn to tie it all together), but, as it's looking like that *may* happen in the DS9 block timeline, I'll have to turn my thinking cap towards that series. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. |
